A big part of the Haikyuu rewatch is watching the characters interact and worrying that I fandomized their relationships too much in my head, particularly with the Karasuno first years because Hinata and Kags keep Yamaguchi and Tsukishima at arm’s length for so long. But then I remember. Oh wait the squad is literally Hinata’s phone background by the end of the story. You don’t put a picture of just some dudes in your after school club as your phone background.

I've been rewatching Fairy Tail the anime for a few months, and I noticed the tierlist I made in september 2023 is OUTRAGEOUS.

So, I decided to keep a new updated tierlist as the episodes go by. Here's how's it going:

A quick ramble-post because I just finished Haikyu 4:21 and I’m gonna explode

Spoilers for Haikyu below. Also lots of screaming. You have been warned.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

WHAT WAS THAT!? THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOSH I LOVED THAT SO SO MUCH!!!!

Before I jump straight into my Nishinoya freakout, because that’s the main point of this post: KINOSHITA?? MY MAN??? YOU ARE A HERO!!

What a day to be a Nishinoya fan. What. A. Day. I can’t even right now. AAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! HE DID IT GUYS!!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Is it weird to say that I feel validated?? I know Noya’s not a rare pick by any means, but compared to a lot of the other characters it seems a lot harder to find people who also have him as their favorite. I mean, he’s been such a steady and consistent presence and he hasn’t had a whole lot of troubles up until Ushijima last season. And even then, he took that in stride and still faced it head on, like he always does. So I feel a bit like an oddball because he is 100% without any doubts my absolute favorite Haikyu character of all time and always will be, even though for the first two seasons he is pretty stagnant in terms of character arc. So this whole arc of his for these past few episodes has been SO. VALIDATING. It hurt so so bad the whole time because THAT’S MY BOY, HOW DARE YOU. But getting more of his backstory? Watching him do that overhand receive? With that music in the background? IN SLOW-MO!? AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! That made me so incredibly happy!!! I kid you not I must’ve rewound that specific part of the episode at least 6 times!

I’m so happy right now.

Noya is such an inspiration. I think that’s why I like him so much. He embodies a lot of qualities I wish I had. Honestly he just amazes me to no end.

I’ll probably do an in-depth discussion of my thoughts on his character after the show is over (and maybe a few others! Right now I definitely plan on doing one about Noya though.), so I’ll get more into what I admire about him when I do that.

also before I leave, KINOSHITA IS AMAZING AND DESERVES ALL THE LOVE AND I’M SO PROUD OF HIM AND HE’S SUCH A HERO!!!

saw someone on hq tiktok finally (FINALLY) agree that hinata and kageyama should be on separate teams post time skip and that it isn't actually as devastating some 'shobio fans' think it is AND THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS GETTING IT WRONG. "i'm sad that they're on separate teams" if you wanted to tell me that you only see hinata and kageyama as ""Shobio"" as opposed to individuals who happen to have some queer undertones you could have just said that y'know..

its still crazy to me how things from ep 2 and 4 became relevant like 200+ chapters later. like wdym that first morning run AND that 3 question thing is gonna be relevant later to punch you in the face?

Kageyama's backstory only being revealed near the very end of the series is really interesting from a meta perspective.

For reference, his chapter is 387 out of 402. That's 96% of the way in.

To contrast, other characters like Tsukishima and Yamaguchi's backstories are shown in Chapters 87-88.

Now, we do get the explanation for his "King of the Court" title in Chapter 6, at the start of the series, but we don't see how he got to that point, or why he started playing volleyball in the first place like Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's stories show.

It creates this situation where, despite being the deuteragonist, the character our protagonist, Hinata, is practically glued to the entire series, we barely know anything about him.

We don't even know he has a sister until that point whereas other characters' siblings like Natsu, Saeko, Akiteru, Alisa have all made appearances way before then. Even Oikawa's sister, though we don't see her, we at least know she exists because of Takeru.

He's both closed off to us (the audience) as well as the other characters in the series, and this results in them finding him rude or disliking his character in general (see: the "Kageyama is abusive" discourse that somehow keeps popping up even now).

Chapter 387 takes place in 2018 and was published in 2020 so it takes him 6 years of in-universe time and 8 years of irl time to really open up.

And the catalyst for all of this is Hinata fulfilling his promise of beating him.

You see, another thing to note is that, whenever Hinata thinks of Kageyama, he's always looking at him from behind.

His internal image of him is someone who's always up ahead, someone he needs to catch up to, meaning Hinata can only see one side of him, he cannot see all of Kageyama until he catches up and passes him.

Which he finally does here.

In this shot Hinata is finally the one who's looking back at Kageyama. At this moment, Hinata (and by extension the audience) can see him for all he is, can see how he was just a lonely boy who's been waiting for someone to meet him where he is, to keep running alongside him and not quit the race.

Someone he doesn't have to go easy on. Someone who would actually tell him to hurry up instead of slow down for a change.

His someone better.

How do you get such brilliant ideas for fics!!

I keep reading your cinnamon Sunshine fic atleast once a year to feel strongly about kagehina. And it always does the charm that it aligns so close to the characters in canon. Ik canon feeling abt a ship is not a must to enjoy fanfics but you do so well with characterisation that makes it very compelling to indulge in the ship

GOSH, thank you!!!!! ;-; That fic was my first for the pair, and although I feel there's much to improve on, I do have quite an attachment to it ;-; ;-; ;-; I'm such a primal person that food influences my mood to an insane level---like whenever I feel the world is ending I need to eat something nutritious and fulfilling or else I end up having a mental breakdown in the middle of a busy sidewalk---and I love love that Haikyuu!! has kinda reinforced that sentiment. Brazil!Arc and Karasuno eating a healthy meal after their devastating loss to Aoba Johsai were my main inspirations for that fic, but I would be lying if I said that story wasn't personal.

So thank you very much for taking the time to tell me you enjoyed reading! I really appreciate it!!! Even though most of the AUs I write about tend to be... erm, not common in fandom spaces, I guess? I'm still glad that you found my characterization of your faves familiar enough to remind you of canon :D

ANGRY CONFESSIONS

characters: kageyama + tsukishima + (gn!reader)

warnings: none but tsukki's a lil mean lol

notes: the backstory is that they got jealous seeing you with another guy cause i couldn't think of anything else + these can have happy endings i just didn't write them sfdghkj

part one / part two

★ kageyama storms over to you, and practically scolds you, asking you what you were doing talking to that guy. his voice keeps getting louder when you can't see the problem. you're confused and tell him you don't need his permission to talk to anybody and if you wanted to go out on a date you very well could. soon he's red in the face, frustrated saying you can't. you ask him why and he just repeats himself saying you just can't. when you ask him again, he breaks and says 'because i love you!...' his eyes widen and he's breathing hard, just staring at you. he drops his gaze and his voice gets smaller. 'how can you not see that?'

★ tsukishima started blatantly ignoring and avoiding you, and the few times he would grace you with conversation (bc you were talking with yamaguchi), it would be filled with snarkier than usual comments and eye rolls. it isn't until you confront him and ask him what's wrong that he actually looks you in the eye for longer than two seconds without rolling his eyes, but they're narrowed in slits as he sneers at you. 'because you're too blind and stupid to see that if anyone should date you it should be me.' his cheeks are starting to blush and he looks away suddenly. 'no one else would be able to tolerate you anyway.'

so one thing i rly like abt mob psycho (shocker !) is that the Incident between the kageyama brothers is kept entirely contained. like, most other shows—at least ones that i've watched—feature long monologues of characters traumadumping to other characters, sometimes in the middle of fights, and while that Does happen a lot in mob psycho, the kageyama bros never do this abt The Incident, and i think that's a fascinating choice bc The Incident is the entire reason why the show starts in the first place. it's the reason mob meets reigen at all, it's the reason mob doesn't fight back against teru, it's the reason ritsu goes through his character arc. it is arguably the Most Important Story Beat and the show has countless opportunities to let the characters spill their guts on screen for drama, and yet neither of the brothers let this spill. neither of them talk about it, except with each other

there's been numerous times i've watched shows where people suddenly traumadump and tell their life story unprompted when truly not a single soul asked, but with mob psycho, both the bros are Constantly berated with questions on Why they do these things; Why are you so off-putting and quiet, Why do you not use your powers, Why won't you fight back, Why do you want psychic powers so badly, Why are you ruining these students' lives now that you have them, Why are you helping me defeat my evil dad . all of these questions eventually loop back around to The Incident, and yet neither of them ever let it slip. neither of them Ever share, and the only time they come anywhere close to it is in the wd arc

it is the event that Shaped Who They Grew Into, and yet it is not known by the main cast at all. teru has no idea, even reigen doesn't seem to understand the full extent of it, even though The Incident is what caused mob to come to his office. their parents prolly don't even know

idk, i just think that's a good detail. the brothers both hold the weight of their troubles close to their chests. and even though that makes it seem as though they figure it out on their own, it couldn't be further from the truth

their own experiences with the people around them allowed them to grow and make mistakes and learn from them, all without sharing their deepest secret, and then both took those new experiences and lessons and applied it to this issue, and learned Again

meanwhile, the rest of the cast is largely clueless abt this Entire issue. it's Crazy to me that most of the cast has no idea what the main issue is, and i think it's a brilliant choice. these characters helped the kageyama bros without ever meaning to or knowing about it, no matter how big or small the role. you truly never know what somebody else is going through !

and even in the end, it's not like there's a big reveal that tells every character the kageyama brothers' Tragic Backstory. nobody fucking knows, still. like Yeah they should totally talk this out and go to therapy or smth but i just like the fact that the story doesn't treat it as some dramatic fanfare for Other Character's Shock Value and doesn't let them air their troubles to the ends of the earth. i appreciate that
